Pictured with me here is our most recent guest, Rick Jacobs. Rick is touring the US on is Harley and staying at Bed and Breakfasts each night. His goal is to visit all 50 states and today we bid him a fond farewell as he headed to Bellingham to board the Alaska ferry. He will be camping on the ferry deck-- the antithesis of his Heron House experience. If ferry camping isn't your thing, how about an indulged stay at Heron House? Life is too short to drink bad coffee! That's why we have our Heron House coffee custom roasted by Troy, the owner of La Crema Coffee and La Conner Roastery in La Conner, Washington. Please stop by and visit him if you come to see the tulips.

Another great find is San Juan Toffee Company. Yum! They make the best English toffee I have ever tasted! I especially love a small piece of coffee toffee (a tofee embedded with espresso beans) while enjoying an Americano at La Crema.

Wine Festival News!

The chamber is producing the 2nd Annual Anacortes Spring Wine Festival on April 10-11, 2010, sponsored by Tesoro and a growing list of other area businesses. The event will be held at the Port Warehouse from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Six hundred tickets will be available for sale each day and are available on line at Brown Paper Tickets for $60 for both days (or individually $40 Saturday and $30 Sunday). The festival will feature 24 Washington wineries and six local restaurants each day. Two supporting activities will be coordinated along with the festival: wine pairing dinners at local restaurants and a Reds, Whites and Blues music event at local lounges.

Taste Anacortes!

This winter plan to experience Taste Anacortes. The event features 15 local restaurants and is being held one Wednesday per month for 3 months. The idea is that you choose a route (knife, fork or spoon) and you visit each of the 5 restaurants within that route, with a prepaid $25 ticket. The dates are January 20, February 17 and March 17. Of course our idea is that you also Taste Heron House. Our breakfasts are ample and gourmet; our hospitality is first class. Come for this epicurean experience. You won't leave Anacortes hungry!

After The Rain

Terry, a recent guest at Heron House, shared his photos with us. I especially like this one. The seagulls seem to know exactly when we are serving breakfast.

It was stormy most of the week but that didn't deter Terry nor the other guests. They filled their days with great hikes in the nearby parks. Terry sampled the fare at our local restaurants including Brown Lantern Tavern, Adrift and the Oyster Bar. He had great things to say about each.

Tonight we have 3 couples at the Inn including one couple that sticks to a vegan diet. So we are trying new recipes and menus this weekend. We've got the right stuff here no matter your dietary preferences.

Today we are enjoying an abundance of sunshine despite temperatures in the 40's.
It's always a great day at Heron House.

Thank you to Colin for this picture taken during his stay with his wife at Heron House this past summer. Just recently there was an enormous landslide and this lovely hill slid into the bay. I was home at the time and it was unbelievably loud and quite dramatic. We now have huge boulders on the shore upon which the swells have been crashing in the recent stormy weather. We also had a few madrona tree fatalities. Thankfully our neighbor sustained no property damage.
We had the most fantastic summer weather I have experienced to date in Anacortes, as is evidenced by this picture!

9. Surf the Web (yes we have WIFI).

11. Chat with fellow guests or with your innkeeper.

12. Get in touch with your 'inner kid'...play one of our board games.

The Mercantile, Anacortes

The Mercantile is a favorite shopping destination of Heon House. The Mercantile is the venue of quality estate sales which are open to the public. The sales are held every 3 weeks and feature 'trash to treasure' items at all price levels. There is furniture, accessories, kitchen stuff, art, tools and who knows what. I must stay that there are truly treasures here often at bargain prices.

The Mercantile is proud of it's 'win-win' business plan. The owners buy estates outright. This is so helpful to the seller; whether the seller is the actual estate owner or the heir to the estate. In turn, the merchandise is sold at very reasonable retail prices. Pictured here is an English ironstone pitcher, quite old actually, that I purchased for $9. It is the second one I have snagged at the Mercantile this fall.

These sales have become part of the Anacortes culture. It is amazing to see the line that forms in front of the shop and down the adjacent alley, often beginning as early as 5 AM. I love to go. I usually arrive just as they open at 10. It's a crunch to get in but it is well worth the time and effort.
